Dreaming a lake
across the street.
Waves coming and
going.
Coming and going
In the middle,
Hokusai wave,
curling towards
me.

Street Light and Moon
The street light shines
through the leaves
like another moon.
Summer Night
Summer night sounds.
Cicadas rise and fall.
An owl calls.
The fireflies have
disappeared early
this year.
Good Luck
The day after Cathryn
died,
The oak uprooted
itself,
falling slowly towards
the street,
shallow roots
cracking the cement
driveway,
taking out the
neighborhood lights.
Cupcakes
Baking cupcakes for
Halloween.
I was four. I
remember orange
and chocolate
icing.
Placing raisens for
eyes and mouth,
my mother talking
to a friend,
laughing.
The Candy Dish
After he stopped
smoking, my
father kept
a smokey glass
candy dish. It
was always full
of lemon drops.
When he died I
took the dish
home. It broke when
we moved.
Sharing Space
Sitting on the porch
in 1963,
Could I feel the shadow of
my son sitting
beside me in
2016?
Friday Night
Listening to Buddy
Guy sing the blues.
The dominos clicking
down on the table.
A phone call –
if he time traveled
back to Beethoven’s
time and composed
his music, how
could it work?
Pearl Cleage Writing
Pearl Cleage writing
or maybe she was
reading. In her
collection of letters from
my grandfather when
they were courting are several
postcards. None with poems.
No typewriter this year.
It’s so hard to get started.
Back to where the poems flow.
Maybe tomorrow.
Leave Taking
The hibiscus were
closed purple cocoons.
The morning sun
just touched the tops of
our trees, the way it
touches those down the
street evenings.
A goodbye hug and
you were on your way.
Gone until next year.
